Review | Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Goodreads Summary

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

THIS BOOK GAVE ME ALL THE FEELS!!! So be ready for a messy, unorganized stream of thoughts..

This book is a totally character driven one, where we join Simon on his journey to coming out and figuring out how and when the right time is. It's about a guy -  Simon - who finds a guy struggling with being gay on tumblr and decides he will help him. So they start exchanging emails and they fall for each other. In the midst of all this, Simon didn't come out to anybody except for Blue (the guy he emails) and he was on his computer at school one day and Martin - a douche bag - finds and reads his conversations with Blue. He took screenshots of the conversations and threatens to out him if he didn't set him up with Abby, Simon's friend.

“Why is straight the default? Everyone should have to declare one way or another, and it shouldn't be this big awkward thing whether you're straight, gay, bi, or whatever. I'm just saying.”

Simon couldn't deal at first with Martin and this book walks us through his and Blue's struggles to come out to their families and being able to deal with the bullying and blackmail. This is such a wonderful story that deals with family, friends, teenager problems, homosexuality and life in general. Becky Albertalli knows how to convey a serious topic through humor and satire, which was a breath of fresh air. Her writing style was easy and flowed perfectly, I found the way Blue and Simon spoke to each other relatable and the teenager thing wasn't overdone like most books do.

“The way I feel about him is like a heartbeat -- soft and persistent, underlying everything.”

Simon was a very lovable character, he knew he was gay and he didn't struggle with figuring out himself and where he stood. He was sure about being gay, but faced difficulties in telling other people. The conversations between Blue and Simon melted my heart, broke it and put it back together piece by piece. I loved loved their relationship and it woven with the ending perfectly. This book was satisfying in so many ways, it made me happy and put a smile on my face. It's definitely my recommendation as a feel good book whenever you need one!

“He talked about the ocean between people. And how the whole point of everything is to find a shore worth swimming to.”

In addition to that, Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda is one of my favorite books of all time. The mystery of trying to figure each other out is amazing. Simon and Blue don't know each other's identities, they only know that they go to the same school. Becky Albertalli leaves clever hints about who Blue is and the reveal was exciting. Although I've known who Blue was beforehand, I was still SO happy to see how the book ended.

The reaction of Simon's family after coming out almost put me in tears. It's absolutely heart-warming to see such an acceptable, supportive family. I loooved them all equally and I can't stress on how good this book is plus yay for DIVERSITY!

Have you read this book? Do you want to? YOU SHOULD! Tell me your thoughts down below♥

PS, I'm sorry for not posting much lately, I promise you I'll be back on track soon :)

Have a great day guys!

Book Review | Confess by Colleen Hoover

Goodreads Summary:

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, a new novel about risking everything for love—and finding your heart somewhere between the truth and lies.

Auburn Reed has her entire life mapped out. Her goals are in sight and there’s no room for mistakes. But when she walks into a Dallas art studio in search of a job, she doesn’t expect to find a deep attraction to the enigmatic artist who works there, Owen Gentry.

For once, Auburn takes a risk and puts her heart in control, only to discover Owen is keeping major secrets from coming out. The magnitude of his past threatens to destroy everything important to Auburn, and the only way to get her life back on track is to cut Owen out of it.

The last thing Owen wants is to lose Auburn, but he can’t seem to convince her that truth is sometimes as subjective as art. All he would have to do to save their relationship is confess. But in this case, the confession could be much more destructive than the actual sin…

This book is a spiral of emotions and events! It took me by surprise and I never expected to love this book the way I did. I always find it difficult to talk about a book that I love so bare with me here.. I'm already writing this review weeks after reading this.

"Tonight, everyone’s focus is on my art, but my focus is on her. She’s the most interesting piece in this entire room."

I cannot talk about this book without being spoilery, I personally went into this book knowing two things: 1) The cover is gorgeous and the title is intriguing. 2) It's revolving around art and has the paintings in the book. If you want to know why the title is called "Confess", you can highlight the following, but to me, it was amazing discovering it by myself so I wouldn't recommend it, but basically: Owen has an art studio where he has a mail slot outside for people to write confessions anonymously and slip them through. He then goes through the confessions and gets inspired to paint a painting out of a certain confession and by the end of the month, he sells these paintings with the confession as the name for the art. Isn't this the best idea for a book you've ever heard of?!! I absolutely LOVED it!!!

"I’ll love you forever. Even when I can’t."

This wasn't an insta-love, but I felt like the romance - or the attraction to be exact - escalated quickly. I didn't hate it, but I was so confused at the beginning, I thought I skipped some pages or something haha. As you might know from reading previous Colleen Hoover books, she incorporates art with tragedy and in this one, the art and the mystery that she clearly states in the first chapters have you on the edge of your seat and on the lookout for answers the whole time. I was reading this with wary, judgmental eyes and I loved every single page of it.

"It’s amazing how much distance one truth can create between two people."

Owen is not your typical fluffy contemporary main character, he is more than that. I think it's because of the book being a new adult book and not a young adult one, but Owen was very mature. He is a very sacrificial person, mysterious and caring. He usually handled things the right way and I loved that about him, he was simply a good person. Of course, he is a hot dude with an amazing personality, but the thing that makes him more and more sexy in my eyes, is that I envisioned him as Johnny Depp. Whenever I think artist, I think long dark brown hair pulled into a pony tail with a scruffy beard and Johnny Depp glasses. Am I right?!! Is it just me?..

"I want you to remember how it feels when I look at you."

Auburn was a very strong character, I admired her personality to a strange extent. She was the definition of a determined, dependent woman. Although she usually didn't have things her way, but she fought to get what she wanted and she was very smart as well.

"She’s like a light, unwittingly brightening up the darkest corners of a man’s soul."

Of course, Colleen Hoover's writing is phenomenal and I can't stress on that enough. I fall in love with her books more and more and I cannot wait to read every single book she has ever written or will ever write.

"I don’t feel lost in him at all, because it’s the first time I’ve ever felt like someone truly found me."

That's all I have to say about this one, if you liked Maybe Someday, I know for a fact you'll love this one! GO READ IT. I highly recommend it.

SPOILERS
(highlight to view)

Oh man, Owen.. I love love him and I love you as well Auburn. Their relationship was perfect from the start and I loved their chemistry. I connected to these characters even though they're adults and I'm only 18. Colleen's characters are so real and genuine and you can never not fall in love with them.

Let's start from the beginning, I'll try to make this in a chronological order for once in my life..

Adam. Adam. Adam. For starters I love the name Adam, and I fell in love with the character. I was so emotionally involved in the story from the beginning when they were both fighting for their love because they were too young and he was dying. I loved that they had sex so early even though it was kind of irresponsible, but I loved it. Young, irresponsible love is what I live for (plus they're teenagers, cut them some slack). The consequences of it weren't so bad - the pregnancy, of course - at least she had a part of Adam with her forever and that to me is beyond amazing. I was firstly so shocked when I found out that she was pregnant, that was totally unexpected. Then again, Colleen Hoover foreshadowed this when they were in the kids isle at (target? Was it target?) and she chose a blue tent because "He loves the color blue." and Owen was like... who the fuck is he?. He is her son!! That was adorable.

The thing that tore at my heart was the custody battle. Lydia is such a bitch from taking away her son from her to not remembering her birthday and not showing up to the bar with AJ. I thank Trey for being such an asshole, because if it wasn't for him, Auburn wouldn't have taken her son which is the rightful thing to do.

Owen taking the blame for his dad wasn't stupid. To me, that is one of the noble things that one could do. Also, not telling Auburn about it was incredible. I, for one, have personal stuff that involve my family that I can never tell anybody - as I'm sure most people do - and I totally understood where he was coming from. It was hard enough for him to stay away from Auburn as it was for her. I love forbidden love and it was slightly so because he needed to stay away from her to go to jail and she needed to stay away from him because of Trey's threats.

I didn't once take Auburn's ass-kissing to Lydia and Trey for weakness. She said it a lot and I'll say it again, a mother has to do anything for the sake of her child and I admired that beyond words. I know that I won't relate to that as much as I would like (because duh, I'm not a mother), but I love love kids and I'm a firm believer that a mother-son/daughter relationship is stronger than any relationship ever. I respected Auburn for taking so much shit for her child's sake and actually taking a stand in the end and doing something about it. I loved her determination and the lengths of where she would go to claim her child back.

Trey was a great addition to the story, even though I hated him - which you're supposed to. The fact that he actually attacked Auburn and black mailed her by using her son against her was a new kind of low. I needed Auburn to report him though, instantly. He needed to be stopped and I think she was smart when she recorded him. I wanted somebody to do that all along and when she did I was like "THANK YOU!"

The ending was beautiful and I loved how everything wrapped up. I loved how the painting that Adam gave to Auburn (or the one that Owen shipped to Auburn on behalf of Adam) was actually Owen's first ever painting. I loved how Adam practically gave Owen his consent and wished that someday Auburn would find the love she deserves after he passes away. I loved loved loved everything about the last couple of chapters and they had me in tears. I LOVED THIS BOOK MORE THAN I CAN ACTUALLY PUT INTO WORDS AND I LOVED ADAM FOR DOING THIS.

When AJ and Owen bonded in the tent, I knew that he would make a great dad and I wanted the three of them to be a happy family together - and they did! I'm never a happy ending kind of girl, but this one had me in happy tears and gave me warm fuzzies!

Have you read Confess?! (You should if you haven't btw) tell me what you think down below!

Happy reading everybody!

IT'S OUT IN THE WORLD #1 | An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

Hello loves!

I'm thinking of starting this "IT'S OUT IN THE WORLD" series where I post about a book celebrating it's release.
And I'm posting twice today to make up for the days that I've spent without posting.♥

Goodreads Summary

AN EMBER IN THE ASHES is a thought-provoking, heart-wrenching and pulse-pounding read. Set in a rich, high-fantasy world with echoes of ancient Rome, it tells the story of a slave fighting for her family and a young soldier fighting for his freedom.

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

Waiting on Wednesday #3 -- Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver

Goodreads Summary:

New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver delivers a gripping story about two sisters inexorably altered by a terrible accident.

Dara and Nick used to be inseparable, but that was before the accident that left Dara's beautiful face scarred and the two sisters totally estranged. When Dara vanishes on her birthday, Nick thinks Dara is just playing around. But another girl, nine-year-old Madeline Snow, has vanished, too, and Nick becomes increasingly convinced that the two disappearances are linked. Now Nick has to find her sister, before it's too late.

In this edgy and compelling novel, Lauren Oliver creates a world of intrigue, loss, and suspicion as two sisters search to find themselves, and each other.

"Alarming and uplifting, a rare psychological thriller that has a kind heart at its center. Read it with all the lights on." -- E. Lockhart, author of We Were Liars.

Author Name: Lauren Oliver
Number of Pages: 368 pages
Expected publication: March 10th 2015 (11 days before my bday, yay)
Publisher:  HarperCollins

About the Author
(ps, she's one of my favorite authors)

Lauren Oliver comes from a family of writers and so has always (mistakenly) believed that spending hours in front of the computer every day, mulling over the difference between “chortling” and “chuckling,” is normal. She has always been an avid reader.

She attended the University of Chicago, where she continued to be as impractical as possible by majoring in philosophy and literature. After college, she attended the MFA program at NYU and worked briefly as the world’s worst editorial assistant, and only marginally better assistant editor, at a major publishing house in New York. Her major career contributions during this time were flouting the corporate dress code at every possible turn and repeatedly breaking the printer. Before I Fall is her first published novel.

She is deeply grateful for the chance to continue writing, as she has never been particularly good at anything else.

Book Review | Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Goodreads Summary:

The poverty stricken Reds are commoners, living under the rule of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers.

To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from The Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change.

Mare finds herself working in the Silver Palace, at the centre of
those she hates the most. She quickly discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy Silver control.

But power is a dangerous game. And in this world divided by blood, who will win?

4.75 stars

Ha, yet another favorite so early in the year. This wondrous beauty was very hard to put down, I found myself reading it on my way to school, in school and on my way from school. It was extremely gripping from the first page and it was a clear indication that I was going to love it. Victoria's writing was beyond amazing, she has this way of throwing information at you without confusing you. It was the first fantasy or second (after HP) that didn't completely confuse me with all the details.

On the downside, speaking of fantasy, I had a strong urge to call that book a dystopia. It felt like a dystopia most of the time, but still a fantasy. Relating to that point, it is basically The Hunger Games meets Shatter Me in a book. I personally didn't mind that, but if you do, then this book isn't for you. Some people found similarities between Red Queen and other books like Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo, Cinder by Marissa Meyer and Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas.. which I still have not read (unfortunately, soon), so this book was original to me and I haven't read anything like it before.

The thing that bothered a lot of people, but me slightly was the world-building. It was confusing at first and I didn't know if it was me or the book, but I was watching Shasha (abookutopia on youtube)'s review for this and she has met the author. She said that the world-building was confusing to her as well and that Victoria mentioned how the world building will evolve in the second book and we'll have everything cleared out later on in the trilogy. I honestly cannot wait, this is torturous.

This book killed my idea of trust (which was already dead), not going to say why though because this belongs in the spoiler section. I didn't realize I was spoiled for this book up until the very last chapter, so TAKE CARE. Again, another indication of a great book is that I knew the ending and I loved every second of it, I was still surprised by it though because it was executed perfectly.

I loved the family aspect in this one, it reminded me of Katniss and her family. Mare was a strong, kick-ass character that I admired. She is now one of my all time favorite female protagonists, because she always kept a straight head, meaning she didn't let love and other trivial things fog her vision or stand in the way of her survival along with her family's. She was just like Katniss and I LOVED that, some people may not though.. It depends..

Disclaimer: I will not mention the male protagonists in this spoiler free review, I'll discuss them with you down below so GO READ THE BOOK and come back for the discussion. Mostly, I loved every single character in this except for a few.

NOW ONTO THE SPOILERS.
(highlight to view)

My dearest Mare, oh how I love you and Cal together. I cannot lie though, I liked her with Kilorn at first.. but (Mal?) made me fangirl. I was waiting for them to be together
and rebel against the queen and king the whole time, but wow, what a strange turn of events.

I liked the name "The Scarlet Guard" so much, and when I realized Shade was with them, my mouth dropped to the ground. When we read about Shade's death, I was almost 100% positive that he was alive. AND HE WAS, in the epilogue I actually patted my own back hahaha and dude, his power is super amazing! I love it and cannot wait for more Shade in the other books.

Firstly, let me state that I was spoiled for the Maven betrayal and it killed me when I realized that I was spoiled for the ending, so dear whoever spoiled me on goodreads, SCREW YOU. I still enjoyed the book nonetheless, the way that Victoria laid everything out took me by surprise; I didn't expect that the king would die.. and to be killed by his own son under the influence of his wife, BRUTAL

Now let's talk about Maven.. Maven, Maven, Maven. Due to the stupid spoiler, I was extremely wary of his actions throughout the whole book, so I didn't fall for his lies. I didn't believe him when he was sweet with Mare, I didn't believe him when he joined TSG. It was fishy to me all along, but I'm not Sherlock Holmes, I was fucking spoiled.

I never once disliked Cal, even when he was a black-hearted monster in the arena, he is the future king (supposedly), he should be this good and have no mercy for the opponents. It's ABC war tactics (I believe). I loved Julian and Lucas, they gave me hope for the silvers, they were sweet to Mare, even though she was a red. Julian in specific, I'm so interested in his back story with -Sarah? that's her name?- and his sister, Cal's mom. A NOVELLA PLEASE. On that note, Victoria talked about a novella in the works on twitter, fingers crossed.

Evangeline, we shall not speak of that evil bitch. Throughout this whole novel I was like..

The ending bugged me, Maven convincing Mare that Cal loves her and to put everything at stake like that.. NO, just NO!! The only time that Mare was naive.. I admired Cal even more for not sacrificing his freaking country for love, he would've been an amazing king.

Now with The Hunger Games similarities that I personally found.. but wasn't bothered all that much about:

  • Gisa = Primrose Everdeen
  • Kilorn = Gale
  • Using Mare to be the face of the rebellion/revolution  = Katniss being the mockingjay
  • The kingdom using her as a distraction = The Capitol using Katniss as a distraction
  • Kilorn joining The Scarlet Guard against Mare's will = Gale joining the revolution against Katniss's will
  • Silvers in training = Tributes in training
  • Silvers fighting in arenas = THE ARENA
  • Maven being good with words = Peeta making people believe everything he says and his ability to speak to a crowd.

Again these similarities didn't bother me one bit, but whenever I was reading, I was reminded of THG.

Have you read Red Queen?! If not, are you excited? :) Comment down below and tell me!

Have a great day everyone <3

As the world turns upside down, Hazel tries to remember her years pretending to be a knight. But swept up in new love, shifting loyalties, and the fresh sting of betrayal, will it be enough?

 7.  I Was Here by Gayle Forman

Cody and Meg were inseparable.
Two peas in a pod.
Until . . . they weren’t anymore.

When her best friend Meg drinks a bottle of industrial-strength cleaner alone in a motel room, Cody is understandably shocked and devastated. She and Meg shared everything—so how was there no warning? But when Cody travels to Meg’s college town to pack up the belongings left behind, she discovers that there’s a lot that Meg never told her. About her old roommates, the sort of people Cody never would have met in her dead-end small town in Washington. About Ben McAllister, the boy with a guitar and a sneer, who broke Meg’s heart. And about an encrypted computer file that Cody can’t open—until she does, and suddenly everything Cody thought she knew about her best friend’s death gets thrown into question.

I Was Here is Gayle Forman at her finest, a taut, emotional, and ultimately redemptive story about redefining the meaning of family and finding a way to move forward even in the face of unspeakable loss.

Expected publication: January 27th by Viking Juvenile

8. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

A debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives.

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

A compulsively readable, emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller that draws comparisons to Gone Girl, The Silent Wife, or Before I Go to Sleep, this is an electrifying debut embraced by readers across markets and categories.

Expected publication: January 13th by Riverhead

9. A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

Kell is one of the last Travelers—rare magicians who choose a parallel universe to visit.

Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once there was Black London - but no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her 'proper adventure'.

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive — trickier than they hoped.

Mentored by her mother and her Zar “sisters”, Azra discovers she may not be quite like the rest of her circle of female Jinn . . . and that her powers could endanger them all.
