Top Ten Tuesday #3 | Ten Books I Will Probably Never Read

TOP TEN TUESDAY is a meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.

Hello guys!

These are 10 books I'll probably never read. I just want to clarify that most of these books are wildly popular and I don't intend on offending any one. This is just my personal opinion and these books don't interest me in any way possible. I also have NOTHING against these authors and their books, but to each their own. Because these books don't personally spark my interest, doesn't mean they won't spark yours.

These are the biggest shockers I guess..

  • City of Bones by Cassandra Clare: This is a 6 book series. I can't commit to reading it all and I seriously am not interested. I will be reading The Infernal Devices series though, maybe if I liked them enough, I'll give these a try.
  • The Selection by Kiera Cass: This was initially a trilogy, then it got extended into a series. I will find it hard enough to read because it's a dystopian and I'm genuinely sick of those.
  • Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo: I don't think I'll be picking this up soon, but I heard amazing things about it. There is a 20% chance I'll be reading this in the distant future. It's just that the premise doesn't interest me at the moment. Nonetheless, I really want to read anything by Leigh Bardugo because I've heard she's an amazing author. Maybe I'll give the first book a try?.. we'll see.
  • Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead: This is a very long series as well and I won't commit. I was into the vampire trend back in 2010. I still love Twilight and The Vampire Diaries, but this book I won't be getting into and I know that for sure.
  • The Young Elites by Marie Lu: I was very excited for this one, even though I still have to read Legend, but I don't think I'll be picking it up soon as well. This isn't a standalone, and it really gets on my nerves when I start a series and don't finish it. Therefore, I won't be reading this one nor giving it a try. The kids with super powers thing has been done before.
  • Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick: I've read Black Ice by this author and it was a disaster. I wasn't a huge fan of the writing nor the characters. Although this series has been on my radar before booktube (probably because of the beautiful covers), but it's a 4 book series and nobody seems to say anything fairly good about it so.. sorry.

  • Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater: THE IRRITATION. I have picked this book up 4 times. I always, ALWAYS put it down 10 chapters in. This just happens every fucking time and I hate the fact that this happens and I'll never pick it up EVER again. It's just meant to be dnf'd. Although Maggie is an amazing writer, I've heard amazing things about the rest of her books, so don't judge her according to this sucky series.
  • Matched by Allie Condie: I have no interest in reading this series as well, I've heard pretty terrible things about the rest of the series.
  • Leap of Faith by Danielle Steel: This book man, I've picked it up 3 times and put it down. Just like Shiver. I've read Malice by Danielle Steel and wow, that book blew me away! But this one, I'm not so sure about..

  • After by Anna Todd: I had to leave the worst one for last. What the fuck has happened to the universe?! Books like After, 50 Shades of Grey and Bared to You are like the most popular books among teenagers at my school (and every school where I live). WHY WHYYYYY!!! I keep groaning in agitation whenever I see people holding these books or reading them. My sister has only read one book in her life - Looking for Alaska by John Green aka my favorite John Green book - and I pushed her into it. She came to ask me about the previously mentioned books and whether I own them because everyone raves about them and she wants to give them a try. I almost slapped her and for two reasons. Firstly, these aren't good books and there are many amazing books which need to be more over-hyped. Secondly, because she's freaking 14!!! Hormonal teenagers reading sexual adult books has been a trend these days and this needs to stop. Seriously.
And this concludes my rather angry post for the day. If any of your favorite books were mentioned above, please don't be offended and tell me down below which one of these I need to take off of the list and read! :)

Have an amazing day!♥

  1. These are some of my favorite books/series! At least try Shadow and Bone, it's fantastic and the series gets better and better. The Mortal Instruments series is WAY worth it. However, I don't think I'll ever read After. Ew.

    1. I'M SORRYYYY! haha
I'm honestly thinking of trying this one! I have heard amazing things and with enough encouragement, I will pick it up someday :). TMI I'm also hesitant about, maybe after reading TID?
Definitely not, what's up with fan-fiction being published anyways?! There are many other aspiring authors dying for a chance to be published!

  2. Ok so I completely agree with you with most of these books. Like I would never start reading the Selection and I did start reading TMI and OMG I completely regret that. Worst decision ever! But The Young Elites was pretty cool. It definitely got original in it's main character so I ended up loving it.

    1. THANK GOD! I thought I would be getting a lot of angry comments, haha! Oh wow, you don't like TMI? That's a new thing to hear and surprisingly relieving! Really?! I may pick this one up as well.. maybe when I'm done with my TBR, I'll give it a try!♥

  3. Okay, I agree on most of these books. Especially After. That should not be considered literature, as well as 50 Shades. I've read the latter, the entire trilogy actually, but I'm aware it's pure crap and nobody should take it seriously. Those books romanticize abusive relationships and just no. I mean, of course you can read whatever the hell you want but hearing so many girls (between 12 and 15) saying their goal in life is to find someone like Christian Grey, just makes me sad because it is. Period. I read the books to see what the hype was about and I want the time I spent doing it back. Of course, now I can judge the series perfectly well and don't feel bad about it. I don't like bashing books or authors but I can't really hold myself with this one. It is indeed the shittiest thing out there and I don't even get why those books were published. Also, the are so horribly written and I don't think an editor went through those books and if she/he did, she/he was deluded.
The Mortal Instruments and The Vampire Academy are two of my favourite series but I get why you don't wanna commit to them. It's completely understandable. I found The Vampire Academy series four years ago but being honest, if I went into a bookstore now and found the books, I wouldn't pick them up either. I don't know if I make any sense LOL
And I've also read Shadow and Bone and it was freaking fantastic. My problem came with the second book because I was basically spoiled about the end (by myself. Yeah, I know... I'm stupid) and it ruined the book for me and then I was just mad with the last book because it didn't end it as I wanted to hahahaha

  4. YES YES AND YES! Why isn't there a like button when you need one?! I Definitely couldn't have said it any better. I'm a huge feminist and when it comes to girls being treated as sex toys with zero self-esteem and self-respect, it's just a huge red flag! and the fact that it's encouraging young girls to be okay with such things and their opinions on Christian Grey.. NO. I honestly thought about picking up the books after seeing the movie for the first one so I can thoroughly judge it (I'm having a debate about them with my best friend and her come back is that I haven't read the rest of the series, which in her opinion is better than the first book), but I couldn't get myself to do it. I don't want to throw my time to waste reading shitty books when I could be reading AMAZING books that I'd love and cherish forever. You feel me? hahaha and yes! The author's writing is like the writing of a 5 year old. I laughed out loud while reading this and I was 12 back then. - I promise I put it down because I was horrified by the horrid sex scenes

Yes, I feel like they're not like Harry Potter where I can read them whenever and they never get old. I feel like they were good series to pick up back then, but not now. I totally understand! You make perfect sense hahaha

AGH I hate when that happens, I always spoil myself on things. I couldn't be mad at anyone, but myself so I act ignorant and keep convincing myself that no, this probably won't happen. (I spoiled myself on Allegiant, if you know what I mean, hahaha)

  5. I loved Hush, Hush (hated Black Ice!) but was disappointed by The Mortal Instruments series and Matched.

  6. We seem to be on the same wave length here Jayy. :D I absolutely loathed The Selection, Matched, Hush, Hush and City of Bones, and I think you're making a wise choice by not reading them. There's nothing much in those books that you'll miss by not reading them anyway. ;) Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous post! ♥

  7. So relieved to hear that you will still be trying The Infernal Devices - it's one of my top favourites.
Just as something for you to consider... the dystopian side of The Selection takes a backseat to the romantic drama.
Shadow and Bone is one of my favourites too! But I can understand if the concept doesn't appeal to you.
I think I am the only person on the planet who actually didn't hate Hush, Hush lol! Although I can say that I can't see you enjoying it.
I'd never heard of After until today, and I think I'm worse off for it ahaha.

  8. I liked the first three Mortal Instruments books, but I loathed 4 & 5, which is why I never ended up finishing this series, despite owning all of the books. :(

I'm not a big dystopian fan myself, but I did like the writing in The Selection, and it definitely didn't seem like a dystopian read. It read more like contemporary. But there was hardly any substance in this book and I pretty much wanted to stab all of the characters at one point...

I enjoyed Shadow & Bone a lot. If you're into fantasy with fabulous world-building, definitely give this book a shot. I haven't picked up the sequel yet, though!

Vampire Academy is one of my favorite series! But I get why you don't want to read it though. And I'm having trouble committing to the spin-off, Bloodlines, as well. :(

You can pass off The Young Elites (it was disappointing for me), but definitely read Legend! That series is full of crazy emotions, especially with the last book.

Hush, Hush had better world-building than some other angel books, but the characters were absolutely infuriating!

I DNFed Shiver as well! But somewhere near the end, I think. I just couldn't take any more and I had to chuck the book across the room. Sorry, book.

I'm only fifteen and I'm completely okay with reading adult books. As long as the teen is mature enough to handle the books, I don't see why they can't. I've been reading adult since 2012, and I was only twelve/thirteen then. But I understand why you wouldn't want your sister near these books.

    Thanks for sharing, Jay!

  9. Oh my gosh, I love Vampire Academy and The Mortal Instruments! You should give them a chance! I've read the first books in the series and they're amazing, but to be honest, I don't think I will be reading the rest! They're good on their own!

The only other book I've read on this list is Hush, Hush and honestly it wasn't that amazing. You're not missing out on much by not reading it!

I'm inclined to read The Selection and Matched, simply because I love their covers! But like you I am a bit fed up with dystopian novels so I might leave them for a while!

  10. I'm about to start the third book of the mortal instruments books and so far I'm enjoying it- I have seen it on a lot of people's lists though! Selection and Shadow and Bone I keep seeing great things about haha, I haven't heard of the others but I'll be sure not to pick them up if I ever cross them again haha :-) Interesting picks! Have a great day :-)

  11. Oh God. I can't believe what you say about After. I had no idea this was going on, because I have no ties to people this age. But that is really terrifying. There are so many good books out there and I wish that kind of meant more to more young teenagers. If I had a 14 year-old daughter I would not want her to read this book. Like one direction sexual fanfiction? WHY is this even being published as a book?

  12. Oh gosh Jay! I almost couldn't believe it when I saw City of Bones as the first one. I love the series but I do understand where you're coming from. I have the same issue with Vampire Academy (despite all the recommendations and hype, I know I'm never gonna start with those books). It's just so hard to commit and get into a big series. Specially when it's already finished. But it's good that you're still going to read the Infernal Devices. I think it's way better than the Mortal Instruments.

As for the Selection series. I did read the first three books, and they were a disaster. It could have been way better. And I don't even get why they extended the series. So, yeah don't read them. Not really worth it.

And oh, Matched... It's too late for me, but save yourself! Don't read it. My best friend read the trilogy and loved it. She kept recommending them to, so I gave the first book a try. And it was too hard to finish. She said it gets better. So I gave the second book a try. Not. Worth. It. Definitely not finishing this trilogy and no longer accepting her recommendations, haha.

And I definitely agree with you on After. I know girls who are years younger than me and yet they brag so much about having read 50 Shades of Grey. I think it's just wrong for teenagers to be reading about these kind of things. I've been called old fashion because of this but that doesn't change the fact that books like these degrade the image of women. And that's not the kind of message you would want to send to the younger generations.

This is a really great post Jay :D

  13. I said that I would never read City Of Bones or the Selection, but I purchased both a couple of weeks ago lol. COB just doesn't appeal to me, but because of my Readers Choice poll, I now have to pick it up lol. I finally caved and got The Selection because sooo many blogger's who's opinion I trust read and actually enjoyed ALL 3 books, so you know what . . . I'm going to give it a try! Hush, Hush is a book I'll never read either, along with Matched and ANY Danielle Steel book. Girl I've heard amazing things about Shadow & Bone so I can't wait until I have time to read it. I honestly can't stop laughing at your rant about After lmao.
