Review | Angelfall by Susan Ee

Goodreads Summary

It's been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels' stronghold in San Francisco where she'll risk everything to rescue her sister and he'll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

*4.5 stars. I received this copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Penryn, her mother and little sister are on a mission to survive in an apocalyptic world where angels destroyed everything creating tsunamis and earthquakes. They were moving one day when they spotted a bunch of angels fighting on the streets, they were ganged up on one angel and fighting him and due to them outnumbering him, they defeated him and cut off his wings. Penryn saw that and wanted to help the bleeding angel so she threw him his sword that flew out of his hands in the chaos. The other angels didn't like that, so they took her little sister Paige as revenge and flew with her to god knows where. She then sets herself on a journey, with the help of Raffe - the wingless angel - to find her sister.

Susan Ee's writing is impeccable. She has this way of creating the perfect world in my head and not this vague image that you usually get while reading books. This felt so real and I could imagine being in the story and I greatly appreciated that.

The characters were kick ass and awesome! I loved Penryn and her determination to find her sister and get her back, I loved how she was kind of fearless and reckless, yet kept a straight head in a way. She reminded me so much of Katniss in the sense of having the urge to rescue her family and her undying love for her little sister. Her snarky comments had me laughing, she maintained a light mood even though the situation is incredibly serious and that I really liked.

Raffe is another story, he has this self-absorbed facade going on and he thinks highly of himself, but underneath he is an incredible person, or.. angel. I loved the unison between these two and how they can conquer anything together. Raffe is definitely one of my favorite characters now along with Penryn and I SHIP THEM.

Other characters that I REALLY liked where Obi, the freaky mother and Dee-Dum.

Overall, this was a great dystopian and even though I've read A TON of them, this was still original. I haven't had much luck with angel books and this one broke that for me. I definitely recommend it!

PS, I'm currently reading book 2, and I think I'll include the discussion and the spoilers for this one together with the second one. What do you think? If you want me to include spoilers in this review comment down below :)
