Review | The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin (Mara Dyer #1)

Goodreads summary:

Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.

She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.
She’s wrong.

4.5 stars

This book seriously hooked me from the very first page, I wanted to read more and I had a hard time putting it down to sleep. The creepy aspect intrigued me, I'm never creeped out easily and I'm into mind-screwing hallucinations. I'll get to that later.. The first thing I noticed and loved about this book is the beautiful, descriptive writing. Michelle Hodkin intended to put the reader in Mara's shoes - lost, confused and clueless. The thin line between sanity and insanity, the mere idea of disbelieving your own mind, it blew me away.

The characters in this book were all lovable with admirable characteristics. Mara with her persistence on holding her ground and trying to unscramble her mind. Noah with his caring, nurturing nature. Daniel, an astute, fatherly persona. Jamie, nothing but a great friend. Clearly though, Noah freaking Shaw was my favorite character, HE IS SO SEXY AND HOT - totally St. Clair Etienne & Daemon Black material. The romance in this one wasn't at all sappy, it focused more on the events of the story more than on the romance that when both characters met, it was nothing but steamy. I loved that!! It balanced perfectly with everything else.

If this book did not have Noah Shaw in it, I wouldn't have been able to conquer it. It's just a spiral of depression and Noah was the sun that broke through the gloominess on a rainy day. I LOVED HIM TOO MUCH!!! Aghh

I thought that this book was your typical paranormal romance, but it's NOT! It's a book that deals with so much more. If you love reading from the pov of an unreliable narrator then it's your cup of tea! Mara believed she was insane and the whole book I was like "trust me honey, you're not the only one going crazy here"

I must say though that the only thing that I disliked about this is that towards the ending, everything confused me. Some important details I just blanked while reading, I don't know if it's me or the book..

THE ENDING RENDERED ME SPEECHLESS. I NEED THE SECOND BOOK. That's all you need to know. I just hope a character makes a re-appearance, a sweet character that I adored.

SPOILERS TIME
(highlight to view)

The first encounter with the creepy Mara ability, the death of Mabel's owner. I freaked out, my mouth literally dropped wide open and I couldn't comprehend how this is possible. When Morales died, I knew that this shit's serious, the stunt with the alligators and the insects too. I was scared of Mara at a point. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!!

The whole thing with the Joseph kidnap, I didn't get. Did Lassiter really do that? But why?!! I think Jude did it to avenge his dead sister Claire. -(So thankfully, Mara didn't kill Lassiter in cold blood for nothing)- But how could he possibly know about Mara's powers and that this had anything to do with her? The Jude revelation had my eyes boggling. ARE YOU SERIOUS

Also the Noah power, WHAT!?!! Their powers are opposites? And how did Noah see Mara before he even met her? I didn't fully get this part. And why the fuck does Mara suck the life out of Noah? This can't be happening. I want them to be together and live happily ever after. (I also read a spoiler about Noah in the last book and if this was true, I won't finish the series. I wanted to kill myself.)

Okay enough with my clueless rambling. I'm sorry about this terrible review, but I'm seriously extremely lost and I cannot chronologically order the events of what's happening. I needed to get what was happening out of my system and I did...

Have a great day people!

  2. This book totally hooks you from the beginning. There are so many parts that are unclear and confusing. It mirrors Mara's mind a bit, no? I LOVE the creepiness. I loved Noah and all the characters. Oh trust me, when you read Evolution of MD you will have NO idea what's going on for most of it xD Lovely review!

  3. So glad you enjoyed this book!
I have to say that I liked Noah a lot when I first read this too aha.
I also found it creepy and a little confusing, but Evolution really increases the creepy feel as well as the "What the hell is going on?" feel.
I read your spoilery section and I have to say, all those questions are the same ones I had and they kept me reading. I hope you enjoy the next book!
